Don’t Let IDEA Become an Empty Promise- Protect Children

To: Rep. Scanlon, Sen. Fetterman, Sen. McCormick

From: A constituent in Wayne, PA

July 10

Increase federal monitoring and enforcement of IDEA, and stop weakening accountability for states that fail students with disabilities. Every child with a disability deserves the protections Congress guaranteed under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Reports of reduced federal monitoring send the wrong message—that states can do less while families fight harder for services. Congress must strengthen oversight, require regular compliance reviews, publicly report state performance, and ensure violations are corrected. IDEA only works when it is actively enforced. Protect students with disabilities by strengthening—not weakening—federal oversight and state accountability.
