I’m asking you to seek answers about the administration’s decision to allow Brazilian senator Flávio Bolsonaro and members of his family to enter the United States. Bolsonaro is under investigation in Brazil for suspected money laundering and other offenses. He denies wrongdoing and has not been convicted. Still, reports say the administration authorized him and his family to come here after Brazilian authorities ordered him to surrender his passports in connection with an investigation. If this administration and the Republican Party believe strict immigration enforcement is necessary to protect the country, why is a powerful political figure facing serious allegations receiving this kind of accommodation? What immigration status was granted, what vetting took place, and why was this decision made? I urge you to press the administration for a clear, public explanation and to ensure that immigration rules are applied consistently. People should not be treated differently because they are politically connected. I oppose offering Flávio Bolsonaro and his family a haven from accountability.
