An Open Letter

To: Rep. Cuellar

From: A verified voter in Converse, TX

July 30, 2024

I am writing again to urge you to oppose the "Kids Online Safety Act", which will do nothing to protect children and do immeasurable harm to the safety of millions of people. Consider the many high-profile data breaches in the last few years; personally identifying information leaked into the world. Now imagine that you require every website to gather this information. To gather it and store it. Here is a picture of my ID to prove that I am adult; now store it, so I can return to this site again. Can you not see how that places everyone in danger? How it renders the personal information of everyone available to bad actors? I have two kids, one of whom goes on-line. We talk to them about what they see, we help them find good information, we PARENT. No doubt, one day, they'll find things that disturb them on-line, but we are giving them the tools to deal with it, not declaring that everyone else must sanitize the world for them, or that everyone give up their privacy in the name of "protecting" our children from the world. This is not a bill that should have been written; it is at best deeply naive, but more likely political grandstanding around "protect the children" without thought to the potential damage.
