Trade Wars

To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt, Rep. Wagner

From: A constituent in Wentzville, MO

April 8

I am writing as a concerned constituent to express my growing alarm about the continued escalation of trade wars and the long-term consequences they may have for our economy and the American people. History has shown us that trade wars often lead to higher prices for consumers, retaliation from global partners, supply chain disruptions, and lasting damage to our export sectors. While targeted actions may be necessary to protect national interests, broad tariffs and tit-for-tat economic retaliation tend to produce more harm than good. Unfortunately, the current trajectory appears to be repeating some of these past mistakes. We need a more thoughtful, strategic approach to trade policy—one that protects American workers and innovation without isolating us from global markets or punishing American families with higher costs. I urge you and your colleagues in Congress to take a stronger and more vocal role in addressing this issue. The economic well-being of millions of Americans is too important to be left to unpredictable cycles of escalation. Please consider advocating for more measured, cooperative trade solutions and increased oversight of executive trade actions. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I hope you will stand up for practical, economically sound policies that serve the long-term interests of the American people.
