I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed immigration detention center at the former prison site in Marana, Arizona. This facility would be detrimental to our community and goes against our values of inclusivity and humane treatment of all individuals. The repurposing of a former prison into an immigration detention center raises serious ethical concerns. Such facilities are known for their poor conditions, lack of adequate medical care, and potential human rights violations. Converting the Marana site into a detention center would perpetuate a system that has been widely criticized for its treatment of vulnerable populations. Furthermore, the presence of an immigration detention center could have negative impacts on our local economy and community relations. It may deter tourism, affect property values, and create an atmosphere of fear and distrust among our diverse population. Marana and the surrounding Pima County area have worked hard to build a welcoming community, and this facility would undermine those efforts. Instead of investing in detention, I urge you to advocate for more humane and effective immigration policies. Resources could be better allocated to improving the efficiency of immigration courts, supporting legal aid services, and implementing community-based alternatives to detention that have proven to be both cost-effective and more humane. The decision to establish this detention center will have long-lasting effects on our community. I ask that you use your position to oppose this project and work towards solutions that respect human dignity and strengthen our community bonds. Please take immediate action to prevent the development of this detention center and instead support policies that reflect our values of compassion and justice.
