I am writing to urge you to oppose the Ohio Prenatal Equal Protection Act. This proposed legislation contradicts the will of Ohioans, who in November 2023 overwhelmingly amended our state constitution with 56.8 % support to protect reproductive rights — including abortion, contraception, miscarriage care, and fertility treatment — through Issue 1.
This was not a close call. A clear majority voted to protect the right to make private medical decisions without government interference.
Ohio voters spoke decisively. They made it abundantly clear that government should not criminalize private medical decisions before fetal viability. Passing this bill would betray that mandate.
This kind of legislation does not reflect the values of compassion, privacy, and personal freedom that many Ohioans hold dear. Rather than pursuing punitive measures, I believe our state should focus on expanding access to healthcare, improving maternal outcomes, and supporting families through education, housing, and economic opportunity.
You cannot ignore or override the will of the voters. To support legislation that directly contradicts what Ohioans just approved is not only undemocratic — it’s a betrayal of your duty as an elected representative. No law should be passed that seeks to criminalize people for exercising a constitutional right. That is exactly what this Act would do.
Ohioans expect their voices to be respected. I ask you to uphold the constitution, honor the outcome of Issue 1, and vote against the Prenatal Equal Protection Act.
