Congressional Oversight Needed: Executive Tariffs Causing Economic Harm

To: Rep. Houlahan, Sen. Fetterman, Sen. McCormick

From: A constituent in Reading, PA

January 17

The sweeping tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have caused widespread economic harm while raising serious questions about executive overreach. Many of these tariffs exceed the authority granted to the President under trade law, disrupt global supply chains, and increase costs for American consumers and businesses. Tariffs function as hidden taxes on ordinary Americans. Families are paying more for everyday goods, manufacturers face higher input costs, and farmers and small businesses bear the brunt of retaliatory tariffs from other countries. This approach undermines economic stability and disproportionately impacts working people while benefiting a narrow set of industries or political allies. Congress has the responsibility to ensure that trade policy adheres to statutory limits and protects the interests of the American people. Oversight should include: - Reviewing the legality of tariffs imposed under executive authority - Assessing their economic impact on households, businesses, and employment - Evaluating whether executive action has exceeded statutory authority or circumvented Congress’s power over trade Unchecked, these tariffs set a dangerous precedent that allows future administrations to impose significant economic costs on the nation without congressional approval. The American people deserve protection from arbitrary or politically motivated economic policies. Congress must act to ensure accountability, protect workers and consumers, and uphold the constitutional separation of powers in trade policy.
