Protecting Constitutional Rights and Reinforcing Oversight of DHS and ICE
To: Sen. Scott, Sen. Moody, Rep. Steube
From: A constituent in Venice, FL
January 25
I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent to urge you to draw a clear line in the sand and take immediate action to rein in the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement regarding their increasingly aggressive tactics toward communities and individuals who are exercising their First Amendment rights.
Peaceful protest, free speech, and lawful assembly are foundational to our democracy. When federal agencies appear to intimidate, surveil, detain, or use force against people engaged in constitutionally protected activity, it erodes public trust and undermines the very principles our nation was built upon. No American—regardless of political views, immigration status, or community background—should fear retaliation for speaking out.
I ask you to use your authority to demand transparency, accountability, and clear boundaries on DHS and ICE operations. Congress must ensure that these agencies focus on legitimate public safety priorities and operate within both the letter and spirit of the Constitution. Oversight hearings, public reporting, and legislative safeguards are urgently needed.
Silence in moments like this is interpreted as consent. I urge you to publicly oppose any actions that target or chill free expression and to stand firmly for the civil liberties of all people.
Please let me know how you plan to address these concerns. I expect my elected representatives to defend the Constitution without hesitation.
