Bring Social Security Fairness Act to the floor!
To: Sen. Schumer
From: A constituent in East Aurora, NY
November 14, 2024
I strongly urge you to bring the Social Security Fairness Act (S. 597) to the Senate floor for a vote. As the majority leader, you have the power to schedule this crucial legislation for consideration. This bill would repeal the unfair government pension offset and windfall elimination provisions that have unjustly reduced Social Security benefits for many public sector retirees, including teachers, firefighters, and police officers. These provisions penalize workers who earned pensions from jobs not covered by Social Security, substantially cutting their hard-earned retirement benefits. Repealing these offsets would restore fairness and provide financial relief to millions of seniors who dedicated their careers to public service. With over 20 cosponsors, the Social Security Fairness Act has strong bipartisan support. The American people overwhelmingly back this reform. Ensuring a secure and dignified retirement for all is a core promise of the Social Security system. I urge you to uphold this promise by allowing the full Senate to vote on the Social Security Fairness Act without further delay. Retirees who paid into the system deserve to receive their full earned benefits.
