I am writing to express my absolute opposition to the proposed appropriation of $1 billion in federal funds for the construction of a new ballroom on the White House grounds. This project represents a staggering failure of institutional competency, financial transparency, and procedural integrity.
Originally presented as an entirely privately funded endeavor, the administration is now seeking a massive taxpayer bailout while simultaneously bypassing the standard approval protocols required for the Executive Residence. My opposition is based on the following factual concerns:
- Procedural and Administrative Failure: The construction of a 90,000-square-foot modern ballroom on historic grounds has proceeded without the standard preservation and approval protocols expected of any federal project. For an administration that prides itself on real estate expertise, this bypass of basic regulatory oversight is a documented failure of governance.
- Fiscal Mismanagement and "Bait-and-Switch": The project’s estimated cost has ballooned from $200 million to $400 million, yet the current funding request is for $1 billion. Utilizing the Power of the Purse to bail out an over-budget project that was promised to cost the public nothing is a fiscally irresponsible use of Article I authority.
- Misappropriation of "Security" Justifications: Proponents are attempting to frame this luxury expansion as a "national security necessity". However, the claim that a gala space is a vital security requirement is not supported by any public risk assessment. Funneling taxpayer money into this space under the guise of security sets a dangerous precedent for executive malfeasance.
I urge you to reject any stand-alone bill or reconciliation rider that authorizes taxpayer funding for this unapproved project. I will be monitoring your record on this issue as a direct measure of your commitment to fiscal accountability and the rule of law.
