We need your support to pass the Equality Act, which will ensure consistent, explicit non-discrimination protections for LGBTQIA+ individuals in crucial areas such as employment, housing, education, public spaces, and federally funded programs. Current civil rights laws protect against discrimination based on race, sex, disability, and religion, but do not explicitly cover sexual orientation or gender identity.
The Equality Act is very popular across America. A national survey released last month by PRRI shows that 75% of Americans support nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQIA+ individuals, including 89% of Democrats, 78% of Independents, and 62% of Republicans. It is only a small but loud minority who oppose these protections, and we cannot let them speak for the nation.
While the Supreme Court’s Bostock v. Clayton County decision confirmed that workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is a form of sex discrimination, broader protections remain necessary. Passing the Equality Act would ensure that these protections extend to areas like education, healthcare, retail stores, banks, legal services, and transportation, closing gaps in federal civil rights laws and guaranteeing equal treatment for LGBTQIA+ individuals.
I hope to see you actively and loudly support this legislation to all people in Delaware and across the United States.
