An Open Letter
To: Rep. Stauber
From: A verified voter in Princeton, MN
April 15
I am writing as your constituent to urge you to support H.R. 8548, the Commission on Presidential Capacity to Discharge the Powers and Duties of the Office Act.
This legislation would establish the bipartisan commission envisioned in the 25th Amendment—an independent body of medical and former executive‑branch experts tasked with evaluating a president’s capacity to carry out the duties of the office. Supporters of the bill argue that Congress has a constitutional responsibility to ensure that this mechanism exists and is functional, regardless of who occupies the presidency.
My request is straightforward:
Please review H.R. 8548 carefully and publicly state whether you will support it. Minnesotans deserve clarity on where you stand on creating the commission the Constitution anticipates for moments of presidential incapacity.
This bill does not predetermine any outcome. It simply ensures that the constitutional process is in place should it ever be needed. Many constituents, including myself, believe that maintaining this safeguard is a matter of responsible governance.
I would appreciate a direct response from your office explaining your position on H.R. 8548 and whether you intend to support or oppose it.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
