Stop Politicizing the Federal Workforce

To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt

From: A verified voter in Kansas City, MO

June 23

I am writing to express my deep concern over reports that the administration is revising the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey while refusing to provide transparency about what questions are being removed, altered, or added. The Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey exists to give federal employees an honest and confidential opportunity to share concerns about leadership, workplace conditions, morale, and the ability of agencies to carry out their missions. If this survey is being manipulated to suppress criticism, eliminate inconvenient feedback, or produce politically favorable results, Congress must intervene immediately. Federal employees deserve a voice. The American people deserve accurate information about the health and effectiveness of their government. Any effort to weaken the integrity of this survey undermines both. I am particularly concerned about the role of Russell Vought. Throughout his tenure, he has championed policies aimed at shrinking the federal workforce, weakening civil service protections, and consolidating political control over career employees. Federal workers are not political enemies. They are public servants who process Social Security claims, care for veterans, protect our national security, inspect our food supply, respond to disasters, and carry out countless essential services on behalf of the American people. A government that fears honest feedback from its own workforce is a government that is more interested in political messaging than good governance. Congress should demand full transparency regarding any revisions to the survey, require public disclosure of all changes, and ensure that employee responses remain confidential and free from political interference. The federal workforce belongs to the American people, not to any administration. Career civil servants should be valued for their expertise and service, not treated as obstacles to a political agenda. I urge you to conduct vigorous oversight of these reported changes and hold accountable any officials who seek to manipulate employee feedback or further undermine the merit-based civil service. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
