Stop Senate Bill 8
To: Rep. Simmons
From: A constituent in Houston, TX
April 2
From Houston Public Media:
"Texas Senate advances bill that would require the Harris County sheriff to collaborate with ICE
Senate Bill 8, co-authored by a Houston Republican, is being sent to the Texas House of Representatives for consideration...
Any county with a population over 100,000 would be required to enter into a 287(g) agreement with ICE, allowing local and state law enforcement agencies to help enforce federal immigration laws. Such agreements would be optional for smaller counties under Senate Bill 8."
I strongly oppose Senate Bill 8. This is a partisan bill putting Democratic populations more in danger than the rest of the state.
Not only are undocumented people being arrested and imprisoned by local authorities working with ICE, people with valid visas, permanent legal residents, and US citizens are being swept up in these deportation raids.
ICE is indiscriminately discriminating against people of color, people with tattoos, and foreign-born residents.
Please oppose this and any similar legislation.
