Oppose Budget Reconciliation Bill
To: Sen. Cruz, Rep. Castro, Sen. Cornyn
From: A constituent in San Antonio, TX
May 16
I am writing as your constituent to urge you to oppose the budget reconciliation bill currently advancing through Congress. This legislation, as reported in recent coverage, poses grave risks to the health and financial security of millions of Americans by making permanent the 2017 tax cuts while slashing essential programs like Medicaid, nutrition assistance, and education. Major Concerns with the Reconciliation Bill: Massive Medicaid Cuts: The bill would impose strict work requirements and increase administrative burdens for Medicaid recipients, which the Congressional Budget Office estimates will result in at least 8.6 million people losing their health insurance over the next decade. These changes would especially harm low-income families, seniors, people with disabilities, and children. Reduced Access to Health Care: By making it easier for states to drop individuals from Medicaid and cutting federal support for states that cover undocumented immigrants, the bill will leave many without any safety net. Hospitals and clinics serving vulnerable populations will face greater financial strain, threatening access to care for entire communities. Permanent Tax Cuts for the Wealthy: The legislation would make the 2017 tax cuts permanent, disproportionately benefiting the wealthiest Americans and large corporations, while providing little relief to working families. The bill also increases the federal deficit by trillions of dollars, risking future cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and other critical services. Cuts to Nutrition, Education, and Clean Energy: To pay for these tax breaks, the bill slashes funding for programs that help children, seniors, and struggling families put food on the table, access quality education, and benefit from clean energy initiatives. Increased Uninsured Rate: Nonpartisan analysis projects that the combined effect of Medicaid and ACA changes in the bill will increase the number of uninsured Americans by at least 7.6 million by 2034, reversing years of progress in expanding health coverage. This bill does not represent the values or priorities of the majority of Americans. It sacrifices the health and well-being of our most vulnerable neighbors to deliver tax breaks to those who need them least. I urge you to reject this legislation and instead work toward bipartisan solutions that strengthen, not weaken, our nation’s safety net. Please stand up for your constituents and vote NO on the reconciliation bill.
