Concern Regarding FEMA Workforce Reductions and Reinstatements
To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt

I am writing to express my concern regarding recent developments involving the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and its workforce decisions.
According to recent reporting, FEMA previously allowed the termination or non renewal of hundreds of disaster response employees, including individuals who play a critical role in responding to emergencies across the country. Many of these employees are now being asked to return following legal challenges and growing concerns about the agency’s ability to effectively respond to disasters.
This situation raises serious questions. Disaster response personnel are not easily replaceable, and disruptions to staffing especially during active deployments or ahead of hurricane season can directly impact the safety and recovery of communities nationwide. Reversing course after such significant workforce reductions suggests a lack of planning and foresight in decisions that affect national emergency preparedness.
I respectfully ask for your oversight on this issue. Specifically:
What steps are being taken to ensure FEMA maintains a stable and adequately staffed workforce?
How will Congress prevent similar disruptions in the future?
What accountability measures are in place for decisions that may have compromised disaster readiness?
Americans depend on FEMA during some of the most critical moments of their lives. Ensuring the agency is fully staffed and prepared should be a bipartisan priority.
Thank you for your time and for your service.
