There has always been state-sanctioned and state-inflicted brutality in this country. What is happening now is not new in kind — but it is escalating in scope, brazenness, and impunity, and it has reached an intolerable point. What happened today is not acceptable. What has been happening for months is not acceptable. People have been detained without due process, brutalized, disappeared, and shot. American citizens are now being killed in broad daylight, on video, in front of witnesses — and the federal government responds by lying to the public. This is a constitutional crisis. If immigration enforcement cannot be carried out without violating the Fourth Amendment, then that enforcement is unconstitutional, full stop. The Constitution does not become optional because the executive branch finds it inconvenient. People living in the United States — citizens and non-citizens alike — are protected by the Constitution. That is not debatable. Congress is the Article I branch of government. You are not a spectator. You are the primary counterweight to an overreaching executive. When Congress does nothing, when it defers, delays, or hides behind partisan calculation, it abdicates its most essential duty. That abdication has now led directly to deaths. Senior officials at the Department of Homeland Security and ICE have repeatedly misrepresented events to the American people. That is not a policy disagreement; it is a breach of public trust. Any Senate-confirmed official who has lied to Congress or the public must be investigated and impeached. This includes the leadership of DHS and ICE. It includes the President and Vice President. No one is above the law. Republicans once claimed to stand for strength, constitutional fidelity, and the rule of law. What I see now is a bunch of weak men coddling an even weaker man — and that weakness is getting people killed. Congress has the authority to act. Congress has the obligation to act. Electoral calculations, party loyalty, and personal ambition are irrelevant. You swore an oath to the Constitution, not to a president, not to a party, and not to your own career. I am demanding the following: 1. Immediate congressional action to halt unconstitutional immigration enforcement practices. 2. Oversight, investigation, and impeachment proceedings for senior DHS and ICE officials who have lied or violated constitutional protections. 3. Impeachment and removal proceedings for executive officials responsible for directing or enabling these violations. 4. Comprehensive immigration reform that explicitly constrains enforcement to constitutional limits — if it must be spelled out in statute because the Fourth Amendment is being ignored, then spell it out. This must end. Not later. Not after another election. Now. History will not be kind to a Congress that stood by while the Constitution was openly violated and people were killed in the name of “enforcement.” You have the power to stop this. Use it.
