I’m writing as your constituent about remarks made by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller at a State Department ministerial on July 16, 2026. According to the State Department’s own transcript, Miller told diplomats from more than 60 countries that Antifa demonstrators are “all deformed in some way — in their appearance, in their dress, in their mannerism,” and instructed officials to “trust your instincts” in identifying them, calling their appearance “a manifestation of their inner hatred.” I am a citizen, not a criminal, and I don’t accept that peaceful protest or simply looking different from someone’s idea of “normal” makes a person a legitimate target of state suspicion. Historians and journalists, including at CNN, have noted that this language — describing political opponents as physically “deformed” and telling officials to trust their instincts to spot them — closely echoes techniques used in 1930s Nazi propaganda to teach the public to visually identify targeted groups. Whatever the intent, this is not ordinary political rhetoric, and it should not be part of an official U.S. diplomatic record delivered to representatives of 60 nations. I’m asking you to publicly state that this kind of rhetoric — sorting citizens into “normal” and “deformed” categories by appearance — has no place in U.S. policy, foreign or domestic, and to hold Mr. Miller accountable for it.
