VOTE NO on Section 702 Reauthorization Without Warrant Requirements

To: Rep. Magaziner, Sen. Whitehouse, Sen. Reed

From: A constituent in Warwick, RI

April 27

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to vote NO on the reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Section 702 was designed to target foreign threats, yet it has become a backdoor for the federal government to secretly spy on Americans without a warrant. The record of abuse is clear and documented: this authority has been used to surveil protesters, journalists, and even members of Congress. These warrantless "backdoor searches" are a direct violation of the constitutional requirement that the government must obtain a warrant to access our private data. Furthermore, it is deeply concerning that figures within the executive branch, including Stephen Miller, are aggressively advocating for an extension of these powers without reform. Allowing this surveillance to continue unchecked provides a dangerous tool for those who seek to advance agendas of mass deportation and domestic monitoring. At the same time, we see government agencies circumventing the law by purchasing our most sensitive personal information from data brokers—spending millions in taxpayer dollars to bypass the Fourth Amendment entirely. We cannot allow a "rubber stamp" for a law that so fundamentally undermines our civil liberties. I ask that you stand up for the Constitution and refuse to extend Section 702 unless it is amended to require a warrant for searches of Americans' communications and to close the data broker loophole. The time to end warrantless spying is now. Please vote NO on any reauthorization that does not include these essential protections
