I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I am writing to urge you to oppose the proposed $900 million cut to National Park Service operations in the current budget proposal. This would represent the largest cut in the agency's 109-year history and would have devastating consequences for our national treasures.
This is not just an environmental issue—it's an economic one that directly impacts communities across our state. National parks generate billions in economic activity and support local businesses, hotels, and restaurants in gateway communities.
The proposed 30% reduction would save only 0.003% of the federal budget while causing irreparable harm to sites that belong to all Americans. Our national parks are already struggling with a maintenance backlog, and these cuts would make it impossible to ensure visitor safety and preserve these irreplaceable natural and cultural resources for future generations.
I respectfully ask that you stand with the bipartisan majority of Americans -- including our family who is out hiking and camping in our parks many times each year -- who value our national parks and oppose these extreme budget cuts. Please work to ensure adequate funding for the National Park Service so these treasured places can continue serving the American people. Thank you.
