Stop DOGE from accessing confidential taxpayer data unlawfully

To: Sen. Booker, Sen. Kim, Rep. Gottheimer

From: A constituent in Newton, NJ

February 17, 2025

Elon Musk's DOGE organization is attempting to gain unauthorized access to highly sensitive taxpayer information stored in the IRS's Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS). This blatant overreach poses a severe risk to the privacy and security of millions of American taxpayers. Granting political appointees access to IDRS, which contains detailed financial data on individuals, businesses, and nonprofits nationwide, violates IRS protocols and jeopardizes the integrity of our tax system. The IRS is bound by strict confidentiality laws to safeguard taxpayer data from improper disclosure or inspection. Allowing DOGE personnel, who have no legitimate need for this information, to access IDRS would be a flagrant violation of these protections. Such a breach could enable the misuse or public dissemination of private financial records, infringing on citizens' rights and eroding trust in the fair administration of tax laws. As representatives, we urge you to take immediate action to block DOGE from gaining access to IDRS and other IRS systems containing personal taxpayer data. Protecting the confidentiality of this sensitive information is paramount to maintaining the integrity of our tax system and upholding the privacy rights of the American people. Any attempt by political interests to improperly access or manipulate this data must be firmly rejected and addressed through appropriate legal channels.
