Publish the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)
To: Pres. Biden
From: A constituent in Santa Monica, CA
January 4
I’m a constituent from California [90405] and member of Indivisible Westside Los Angeles.
I’m writing to urge you to enshrine gender equality into our Constitution by instructing the National Archives to publish the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA cleared the 38-state threshold for ratification in 2020, but because of years of legal debates and Republican obstruction, the National Archivist has yet to formally publish and certify the ERA as the 28th Amendment.
The President has the authority and the responsibility to put the ERA into the Constitution as required, and we ask that you do so before you leave office. While not a silver bullet, the ERA could provide a critical tool for combating discrimination against women, girls and LGBTQ+ people nationwide. As President, you should send the National Archivist an “official notice” that the ERA “has been adopted,” specifying the states that have ratified the amendment.
Thank you for your time and attention.
