Strong Opposition to H.R. 25 - The FairTax Act of 2025

To: Sen. Moreno, Rep. Kaptur, Sen. Husted

From: A constituent in Maumee, OH

February 18

I am writing to express my vehement opposition to H.R. 25, the FairTax Act of 2025. This bill, which proposes replacing the federal income tax with a 30% national sales tax, is deeply flawed and would cause significant harm to working families, small businesses, and the U.S. economy as a whole. I urge you to reject this legislation and focus on tax reforms that prioritize fairness, equity, and economic stability. The FairTax Act would disproportionately burden low- and middle-income Americans, who spend a far greater portion of their earnings on essential goods and services. A 30% sales tax would drastically increase the cost of living, making it harder for families to afford basics like groceries, clothing, and healthcare. This regressive tax structure would exacerbate income inequality and push more Americans into financial insecurity. Additionally, the bill’s elimination of key deductions and credits—such as the Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit, and deductions for education and healthcare expenses—would strip away vital support for millions of households. These programs are lifelines for working families, and their removal would have devastating consequences for those already struggling to make ends meet. The FairTax Act also poses significant risks to small businesses, which would face higher operational costs and reduced consumer spending. The proposed tax shift could lead to economic instability, job losses, and a decline in small business growth, which is the backbone of our economy. Furthermore, the bill’s implementation would create enormous administrative challenges and uncertainty. Transitioning to a national sales tax would require a complete overhaul of the tax system, placing an undue burden on states, businesses, and individuals. The potential for tax evasion and the creation of a black market for goods and services further undermines the feasibility of this proposal. In short, the FairTax Act is a dangerous and misguided piece of legislation that would harm the most vulnerable Americans, stifle economic growth, and create unnecessary chaos in our tax system. I strongly urge you to oppose this bill and instead advocate for tax reforms that protect working families, promote fairness, and strengthen our economy. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I trust that you will prioritize the needs of your constituents and reject H.R. 25. I look forward to your response and hope to see you take a stand against this harmful legislation.
