Demand Accountability and Support Impeachment for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth
To: Sen. Marshall, Sen. Moran
From: A constituent in Prairie Village, KS
November 6
I am writing to you today as a constituent from Kansas to express my deep concern regarding the actions of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. I urge you to join a bipartisan coalition advocating for rigorous congressional oversight and supporting impeachment proceedings to restore constitutional integrity to our national defense leadership.
Although impeachment originates in the House of Representatives, the Senate plays a vital role in upholding executive accountability. Severe, documented actions across multiple global operational theaters warrant immediate legislative intervention:
Constitutional War Powers: Secretary Hegseth has repeatedly initiated sustained military kinetic operations—including strikes across Iran, Yemen, and the Red Sea corridor—without prior congressional authorization, a formal declaration of war, or an immediate self-defense mandate under the War Powers Resolution of 1973.
Violations of International Law: Lethal maritime strikes off the coast of Venezuela present grave legal concerns. Reports detailing follow-up strikes that targeted incapacitated shipwreck survivors in international waters violate the Geneva Conventions, international humanitarian standards, and the Department of Defense’s own Law of War Manual. Deploying lethal military force against civilian vessels without due process replaces standard law enforcement interdiction with unauthorized extrajudicial executions.
Operational Security Compromises: Transmitting sensitive operational data—including exact strike packages, target coordinates, and execution timelines—over unsecured commercial messaging platforms like Signal severely compromises the safety of active-duty service members and directly violates federal record-retention laws.
Domestic Misuse of Military Assets: Deploying active-duty troops and military resources for domestic law enforcement and border security operations creates serious statutory conflicts with the Posse Comitatus Act and misdirects critical defense appropriations.
Obstruction of Congressional Oversight: Refusing to release unedited video footage and withholding operational strike logs directly obstructs Congress’s constitutional duty to inspect executive actions.
Our national security leadership must be held to the highest ethical and legal standards. I urge you to exercise your oversight authority, back House impeachment efforts, and defend our constitutional balance of powers.
