YOU Must Condemn Calls for Americans to Be Killed

To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz, Rep. Carter

From: A constituent in Leander, TX

October 7

I am your constituent. I am begging YOU to do something to stop Trump’s recklessness as president. By staying silent, YOU are condoning his bad behavior. Please, make this the moment you must draw the line. President Trump has publicly said that if Iran “take[s] Los Angeles” or “take[s] San Diego,” it would be “a very small price to pay.” He has spoken about American cities being “taken out.” Those are not enemy cities. They are American cities. Millions of Americans live there. 10 military bases are there. Are none of those Americans worth fighting for? A President cannot casually dismiss the destruction of American communities—and the deaths of American civilians—as an acceptable price of war. If YOU remain silent when the President speaks this way, YOU are failing in your constitutional responsibility to check executive power and protect the American people. I am demanding that YOU publicly and unequivocally condemn these statements and use Congress’s constitutional powers to determine whether any resulting policies or orders could unlawfully endanger American civilians. The Constitution deliberately divides war powers between the branches. Article I, Section 8 gives Congress the power to declare war, fund and regulate the armed forces, and make laws necessary to execute its constitutional responsibilities. Congress also possesses oversight and investigative authority necessary to legislate and to hold the executive accountable. I am demanding that YOU: -Condemn these statements publicly and unequivocally. -Demand a full explanation from the White House regarding what the President meant and whether any U.S. policy contemplates accepting attacks on American cities. -Conduct hearings and investigations into any policies, orders, or actions that could place American civilians unlawfully at risk. -Use Congress’s legislative, appropriations, oversight, and—if warranted—impeachment powers to enforce constitutional limits on presidential authority. This is bigger than partisan politics. American lives cannot be dismissed as the price of any President’s policy. Draw the line. Protect American civilians. Defend the Constitution. I expect a written response explaining exactly what action you will take.
