Urge measured approach to resolve trade disputes through dialogue

To: Sen. Banks, Rep. Houchin, Sen. Young

From: A constituent in Bloomington, IN

April 6

The imposition of sweeping tariffs has sent shockwaves through the global economy, disrupting carefully balanced supply chains and trade relationships built over decades. While aimed at addressing legitimate concerns about unfair trade practices, the blanket nature of these tariffs risks sparking a destructive trade war that will raise prices for consumers, eliminate jobs, and hinder economic growth across sectors. I urge you to reconsider this approach and instead pursue targeted, evidence-based actions through established international frameworks and negotiations with trade partners. Broad tariffs are an indiscriminate weapon that will invariably inflict collateral damage on American industries and workers. Trade disputes should be resolved through dialogue and reforms to agreements like NAFTA and the WTO, not by escalating protectionist policies that jeopardize the free flow of goods and services underpinning the modern economy. The severe market reaction highlights the need to swiftly defuse tensions and restore certainty to international commerce. Restraint at this juncture can prevent lasting damage. I implore you to work constructively with allies to address legitimate grievances through existing mechanisms, defend the principles of free and fair trade that have benefited the global economy, and avoid the lasting harm that an all-out trade war would unleash.
