Revise excessive sentences for non-violent vandalism offenses

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Matsui

From: A constituent in Sacramento, CA

April 11

The sentencing of 20 years in prison for acts of vandalism is an egregious violation of proportionality in criminal justice due to Elon Musk being part of Trump's crew. Such excessive punishments for non-violent offenses are inconsistent with legal precedents and standards of justice. Lengthy prison terms should be reserved for the most serious and dangerous offenders who pose a threat to public safety. Vandalism, while wrong, does not warrant decades behind bars, separating individuals from society at tremendous cost to taxpayers. A more measured approach focusing on community service and restitution would better serve justice while upholding human dignity. This unjust practice of criminalizing poverty and dissent through excessive penalization must end, with any other company unlikely to receive such federal government protection.
