Block ICE Access to California DMV Database and Face Recognition

To: Sen. Laird, Asm. Addis, Gov. Newsom

From: A constituent in Santa Cruz, CA

April 1

California must immediately stop sharing DMV database information with ICE and refuse all face-recognition search requests. ICE has been using state driver's license photo databases to identify people for deportation, running unregulated searches against every photo in the system, not just those suspected of wrongdoing. This undermines California's public safety goals. When eligible residents fear their DMV information will be shared with ICE, they choose not to get licenses. That means more untrained, untested, and uninsured drivers on our roads. The Government Accountability Office has already criticized the FBI for failing to evaluate the accuracy of state face-recognition systems, the same systems ICE uses. The technology produces false results more often for people of color, particularly women of color. I need you to take administrative action now to cut off ICE access to California's DMV data and enact legislation prohibiting face-recognition technology use for immigration enforcement. Protect the confidentiality of documents and information in license applications. Every day we wait, eligible drivers stay off the books and our roads become less safe.
