Leadership Means Feeding the Troops, Not Just Funding the Pentagon

To: Rep. Bacon

From: A constituent in Omaha, NE

July 1, 2025

As your constituent, I urge you to vote NO on the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBBA) — because this bill undercuts the very people you’ve sworn to support: our military service members. As a retired brigadier general, you know what “mission ready” really means. It doesn’t stop at weapons and troop counts — it means troops whose families are fed, who aren’t distracted by financial stress, and who return home to a country that honors its promises. The OBBBA fails on every front: • It slashes SNAP benefits that over 22,000 active-duty households rely on — a disgrace for the wealthiest military on Earth. • It adds harsh restrictions and red tape for veterans receiving food aid, gutting exemptions for the disabled and unhoused. • It endangers future VA investments, even as we still rely on nonprofits like the Wounded Warrior Project to do what government won’t. This is a bill that balloons the Pentagon’s budget by $150 billion, but can’t spare the political will to make sure a young corporal’s kids eat three meals a day. Even if you agree with some of the bill’s tax or regulatory changes, the moral and strategic failure to support military families is indefensible. Food-insecure troops are not “mission ready.” A hollow VA is not strength. And a country that tells its service members “you’re on your own” after they serve is not leading — it’s retreating from its duty. You’re not running again. That gives you freedom to vote your values. Reject this bill, not to oppose your party — but to live up to the oath you’ve carried longer than most in Washington. Vote NO on OBBBA.
