At a time when Americans are already overwhelmed by economic uncertainty and political division, Congress should not be creating new barriers between citizens and the ballot box. As your constituent, I am urging you to oppose the SAVE Act.
The right to vote is fundamental, and this legislation would create unnecessary barriers for eligible voters. Many Americans do not have easy access to documents such as passports or certified birth certificates, and requiring additional documentation to register or update voter registration risks disenfranchising lawful voters; including married women whose names have changed, rural residents, seniors, military families, students, and low-income Americans.
There is no evidence of widespread noncitizen voting that would justify imposing new hurdles on eligible voters. Rather than making it harder for citizens to participate in our democracy, Congress should focus on ensuring that every eligible voter can register and cast a ballot without unnecessary obstacles.
Vote against the SAVE Act and oppose any effort that would make voter registration more difficult for eligible Americans, and protect the rights of the American public.
