Dear Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper,
I am a Colorado constituent writing to demand that you use every available Senate procedural tool to slow, scrutinize, and force accountability in the legislative process.
The Senate was designed to operate deliberately, not by shortcut, unanimous consent, or voice vote. I expect you to actively resist efforts that bypass debate, transparency, and recorded accountability.
Specifically, I urge you to:
Object to unanimous consent agreements as a default, particularly those that waive readings, limit debate, or bundle amendments.
Require that bills and amendments be read in full when permitted under Senate rules.
Force cloture votes rather than allowing informal agreement to end debate.
Object to “vote-a-rama” processes that rush complex legislation without adequate consideration.
Object to unanimous consent for adjournment or recess when substantive legislative business remains.
Demand quorum calls to ensure the Senate is properly constituted before proceeding.
Insist on recorded roll-call votes instead of voice votes wherever possible.
Force full procedure and formal votes on motions, amendments, and nominations rather than allowing them to pass by consent.
These tools exist for a reason: to protect minority rights, ensure transparency, and require senators to go on record. Failing to use them enables legislative shortcuts that undermine public trust and constitutional responsibility.
I do not expect you to agree with every position taken in the Senate. I do expect you to defend the institution’s procedures and force accountability through them.
Please confirm that you are willing to use these procedural mechanisms aggressively and consistently in the service of transparency and proper legislative process.
Sincerely,
A Colorado constituent
