All or no religions in public schools - no favoritism

To: Rep. Womack, Sen. Cotton, Sen. Boozman

From: A constituent in Fort Smith, AR

November 20

Our public schools should be welcoming environments for students of all faiths and beliefs. By maintaining religious neutrality, schools protect the freedom of religion for everyone. Officially sponsored prayer, proselytizing, or promoting any particular religious viewpoint violates the constitutional principles of separation of church and state. It oversteps the rights of students and parents to decide their own religious upbringing. Public school officials have a legal and ethical duty to remain neutral on matters of religion. Numerous court cases have affirmed this, ruling that practices like teacher-led prayer, distribution of religious materials, prayers at school events, and school involvement with religious clubs are unconstitutional. When schools disregard this mandate of neutrality, they infringe on the religious freedom of students and families. To uphold true religious liberty and create an inclusive educational setting, public schools must steer clear of endorsing or advancing any faith over others. Only by maintaining a secular environment can schools ensure all students feel safe, welcome, and able to receive a quality education without religious coercion or pressure. Protecting the separation of church and state in education preserves the rights and freedoms at the core of our democracy.
