An Open Letter
To: Mayor Adams
From: A verified voter in Jackson Heights, NY
December 6
I am writing as a concerned resident who values our city’s commitment to protecting civil rights. With Trump reentering the White House in January, I am deeply concerned about the federal policies that could threaten members of our community, and your recent comments that suggested a willingness to deport undocumented immigrants.
New Yorkers need you to stand up for and defend all of our immigrant neighbors. We should not support the Trump administration’s cruel ambitions. I want to remind you that our city’s laws prohibit federal immigration authorities from entering a shelter unless they have judicial warrants. Likewise, our city’s sanctuary policies only rarely permit the Police Department to cooperate with federal officials to deport people.
Thank you for your dedication to safeguarding our values and for taking steps to protect our community in the face of a second Trump administration.
