It’s Not Too Late to Stop the SAVE Act!

To: Sen. Graham, Rep. Norman, Sen. Scott

From: A verified voter in Rock Hill, SC

April 12

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the SAVE Act. While I understand the intent to protect the integrity of our elections, I am deeply concerned about the disproportionate and discriminatory effects this law would have on several vulnerable groups of Americans. First, this legislation will place an undue burden on married women whose legal name may not match their birth certificate. Many women change their last name after marriage, and under the SAVE Act, they would be required to present additional, often costly, forms of identification—such as a passport—just to register to vote. For many families already struggling with inflation and rising living expenses, this is an unacceptable financial barrier to a fundamental right. Second, the law is especially harmful to transgender individuals whose lived name and gender presentation do not match the name on their birth certificate. Requiring trans people to present documents that may not reflect their identity creates a dehumanizing and potentially dangerous hurdle, effectively disenfranchising them. Voting should be a safe and accessible experience for every American, not one that causes fear or distress. Third, and perhaps most troubling, is the broader impact this law will have on low-income and minority communities. People in these groups are statistically less likely to possess the additional forms of ID the SAVE Act demands. The cost, time, and bureaucratic knowledge required to obtain such documentation will create yet another layer of systemic disenfranchisement. Many simply will not be able to vote—not because they are ineligible, but because they cannot afford or navigate the barriers. Voting is a right, not a privilege reserved for those with money or access. Laws like the SAVE Act, which claim to safeguard our elections, instead risk silencing large segments of the electorate—particularly women, trans people, and people of color. As your constituent, I urge you to oppose the SAVE Act and to support legislation that expands access to the ballot box, not restricts it. We should be making it easier for all citizens to participate in our democracy—not harder. Thank you for your time and your service.
