Restore Federal Funding for Health Research at CHOP and Penn

To: Rep. Scanlon, Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman

From: A constituent in Wayne, PA

July 23

Federal funding cuts to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) have already forced research programs at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the University of Pennsylvania to close. These are not partisan projects—they improve patient safety, healthcare quality, and the evidence doctors use to care for children and adults. Pennsylvania is home to world-class medical research that drives better treatments, stronger hospitals, and economic growth. When research funding is abruptly canceled, patients lose opportunities to benefit from new discoveries, scientists leave, and years of work can be lost. Please restore AHRQ funding, require transparency about how grant decisions are made, and ensure that future funding decisions are based on scientific merit and public health—not politics. Protect the research that saves lives, improves healthcare, and keeps the United States a global leader in medical innovation.
