I strongly oppose blocking the promotion of Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue, the decorated career military officer who oversaw the withdrawal from Afghanistan. As the last U.S. service member to depart during that chaotic operation, Donahue demonstrated exemplary leadership and courage. Holding up his well-deserved promotion to four-star general disrespects his decades of selfless service to our nation. The withdrawal from Afghanistan was directed by civilian leaders based on a consensus policy decision. While the operation faced tragic losses, punishing the general executing lawful orders is misguided scapegoating. It undermines good order, discipline and civil-military relations. Donahue's extensive experience makes him exceptionally qualified to lead U.S. Army forces in the critical European theater at this pivotal time. Obstructing his promotion damages military readiness and America's standing with allies facing shared threats. I urge you to allow Lt. Gen. Donahue's promotion to proceed without further delay. He has earned this honor through proven leadership and dedication to duty. Advancing America's national security interests should transcend political considerations.
