End the Shutdown—Stop Starving America While You Posture

To: Sen. Schmitt, Sen. Hawley, Rep. Onder

From: A constituent in Columbia, MO

October 28, 2025

This isn’t about a difference of opinion. This is about families going hungry while you sit in committee rooms trading hostage logic like it’s business as usual. You are holding the federal government—and millions of Americans—hostage, and the pain is real. As one report put it: “What began as a modest workplace amenity for public servants has metastasized into a taxpayer-funded citadel of privilege — a Capitol Hill concierge service.” X (formerly Twitter) +1 Meanwhile, you’re slashing access to food and healthcare for those who need it most. A non-partisan analysis found Republicans’ reconciliation bill “would cut nearly $300 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) through 2034.” Center on Budget and Policy Priorities +1 Another flagged “food insecurity will spike as states face tough choices.” CSPI +1 And let’s not ignore the healthcare angle. One article warned that cuts to Medicaid will mean “substantial increases in mortality.” AP News You claim this is about politics. But it’s hurting real people—kids missing meals, parents facing ruin, veterans forced to wait while you argue on behalf of one party’s ego. Here’s the truth: This shutdown is not the Democrats’ doing. You control the House. You dominate the Senate and executive branch. Yet you refuse to act. The image of you pointing fingers while you hold the check-book for hungry children is obscene. One state warned: “Millions of low-income Americans will lose access to food aid on Nov. 1, when half of states plan to cut off benefits due to the government shutdown.” Politico Pro Stop hiding behind “negotiations” and “process.” End the shutdown now. Fund the programs that keep people alive. Reinstate healthcare subsidies, guarantee meals for children, protect veterans and workers. You were elected to serve—not to watch America suffer while you argue over power. The clock is ticking. Every day you prolong this is another day you choose spectacle over service, politics over people. End it.
