Secure Long-Term NASA Funding for Continued Scientific Innovation

To: Rep. Chu, Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff

From: A constituent in Pasadena, CA

November 20, 2025

As a constituent deeply concerned about the future of space exploration and scientific discovery, I urge you to support a robust, multi-year budget for NASA that protects and increases funding for its science programs. The current uncertainty surrounding NASA's fiscal year 2026 budget is causing significant disruptions to research programs and mission planning, jeopardizing our nation's leadership in space and scientific innovation. The recent proposal by the White House Office of Management and Budget to drastically cut NASA's overall and science budgets would have devastating consequences. Shutting down over 40 major projects, including 23 active missions, would not only halt ongoing research but also waste years of investment and expertise. I commend both the House and Senate Appropriations Committees for rejecting these cuts in their separate funding bills. NASA's research often yields substantial long-term benefits that extend far beyond space exploration. These innovations drive technological advancements, create jobs, and contribute to economic growth. However, the nature of space missions requires long-term planning and stability. Many projects take decades to develop and execute, making them particularly vulnerable to annual budget fluctuations. I strongly advocate for passing a full-year appropriations bill that not only maintains but increases NASA's science funding. Additionally, I urge you to push for a multi-year budget framework for NASA. This approach would provide the agency with the stability and predictability needed to undertake ambitious, long-term projects without the constant threat of cuts or shutdowns. The ongoing policy uncertainty has already resulted in delayed grant solicitations and fewer awards, hindering scientific progress. By securing a stable, multi-year funding commitment, we can ensure that NASA continues its vital work in space exploration and scientific discovery, maintaining our global leadership and inspiring future generations of scientists and engineers. I request that you work with your colleagues to finalize a budget that protects NASA's missions and workforce, and to initiate discussions on establishing a multi-year funding mechanism for the agency. The future of our nation's scientific endeavors and our understanding of the universe depend on your support for sustained, robust NASA funding.
