Please cancel or terminate any bills moving forward on healthcare privatization. Lansing, MI – June 29, 2026 – Just months after the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services withdrew a request for proposals to privatize parts of Michigan’s behavioral health system, a new poll from the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan (CMHAM) and EPIC-MRA affirmed public opposition to privatization has increased since 2022. Of likely November 2026 voters, 70% are against shifting the management of medicaid mental health services to private health insurance companies, up from 64% in 2022. Conversely, public support for privatization has continued to erode, falling to just 19% from 21% four years ago. "Michigan voters have consistently rejected efforts to privatize public mental health services, and these new results show that opposition has only grown stronger over the last four years," said Alan Bolter, CEO of the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan (CMHA) "As policymakers consider the future of Michigan's behavioral health system, voters are sending a clear message: they want community mental health services to remain public and locally accountable, focused on serving people rather than insurance company interests."
