Joint Resolution of Disapproval to halt the $20 Billion Arms Transfer to Israel
To: Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden
From: A constituent in Portland, OR
August 22
Sens. Merkeley and Wyden,
I am a fellow resident of Oregon. As you may well know, last 10 months have been an atrocious time for international world affairs. Our foreign policy on Gaza has nothing but abhorrent - the lack of respect we have shown for Palestinian life will continue to haunt us and our next generation for years to come.
But it’s not too late to do something about it. I see that a recent large sale of arms to Israel is set to go forth if no Joint Resolution of Disapproval (JRD) is introduced in the senate. Who can introduce a JRD - it is you Senators, you are the lucky ones who possess such power! Why don’t one of you introduce such a JRD, just one single senator can delay this arms transfer and call the senate into vote. We need to demonstrate some authenticity and responsibility if we want this country to continue to exist in any sustainable way. Otherwise, all we are is a place withou purpose, a place whose people, especially the elites, consume and consume, a place whose people never gives back!
If we disrespect life in Gaza today, we are setting up a dangerous precedent. Lack of human rights there puts human rights in danger everywhere. You may have heard of the phrase called Imperial Boomerang, where how an imperial force treats non-citizens later becomes the way its own police state and power politic treats its citizens eventually. Except, there is no "eventually" to wait for when it comes to the U.S. We already treat our own with quite the lack of dignity, whether in prisons or protests or healthcare. But without drifting too much, I want to focus on what you can do today.
I beseech you Senators! Please do something - introduce a Joint Resolution of Disapproval and halt the decision to go forward with $20 Billion more to Israel - you know that can't bring anything good. It will bring destruction abroad and more poverty and deficit home. If you are indeed the leaders you claim you are, do something - for Gaza, for Portland, for the rest of humanity. You only get to live once, and you sure don’t get to be a Senator too many times. So do something good with it.
Thanks!
