Reverse erosion of press freedom, protect journalist sources

To: Rep. Van Duyne, Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Bedford, TX

April 26

The administration's decision to rescind protections for journalists and allow subpoenas, search warrants, and compelled testimony about their sources is a major blow to press freedom. A free and independent media is essential for a healthy democracy to hold power accountable. Compelling reporters to reveal confidential sources will have a chilling effect, drying up leaks and whistleblowing that bring important issues to light in the public interest. This move undermines the principles of the First Amendment and puts the United States out of step with democratic norms. Some of the most consequential reporting exposing wrongdoing has relied on the ability of journalists to protect their sources. Without that shield, corruption and abuse of power will go unchecked. A thriving democracy requires a vigorous free press to scrutinize the actions of government and corporations. Allowing law enforcement to compel journalists to betray their sources is a dangerous erosion of press freedom that must be reversed to uphold transparency and accountability. Protecting whistleblowers and upholding robust press protections are vital for maintaining an informed citizenry. I urge you to take action to preserve these fundamental democratic principles.
