The proposed legislation to designate certain organizations as "terrorist supporting" and terminate their tax-exempt status raises serious concerns about due process. Revoking an organization's tax-exempt status without a fair and transparent review process could unduly target legitimate social justice groups. Such a sweeping measure risks stifling civil liberties and dissenting voices that are vital to a healthy democracy. While the intent may be to combat terrorism financing, the broad language could enable politically-motivated crackdowns on organizations advocating for racial equality, LGBTQ+ rights, immigrant rights, and other progressive causes. History has shown how overly expansive national security powers can be abused to suppress marginalized communities and differing ideologies. I urge reconsideration of this legislation to include robust due process protections, clear evidentiary standards, and oversight mechanisms to prevent abuse and safeguard constitutional freedoms of speech, assembly and association. Protecting national security need not come at the expense of cherished civil liberties that define American democracy.
