I am deeply concerned about recent actions that threaten our First Amendment rights. The cornerstone of our democracy is under assault, and I urge you to take immediate action to protect freedom of speech.
Alarming incidents have come to light that suggest a coordinated effort to silence criticism and dissent. The FCC's reported threats against ABC affiliate licenses in response to Jimmy Kimmel's criticism of MAGA policies is a clear abuse of power. This, coupled with the cancellation of Stephen Colbert's show following Paramount's settlement with former President Trump, paints a disturbing picture of corporate acquiescence to political pressure.
Even more troubling are calls from administration officials to prosecute 'hate speech,' despite clear constitutional protections. Such rhetoric, combined with lawsuits filed by Trump against major news outlets like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, creates a chilling effect on free press and public discourse.
Furthermore, reports of government agencies taking action against immigrants for expressing pro-Palestine views are deeply concerning. This selective targeting based on political speech is antithetical to our values and must be addressed.
I implore you to take the following actions:
1. Publicly condemn these attacks on free speech and press freedom.
2. Initiate oversight investigations into these incidents, particularly the FCC's actions.
3. Call for the resignation of FCC Chair Brendan Carr for his role in threatening broadcast licenses.
4. Support articles of impeachment against former President Trump for his continued assaults on First Amendment rights.
Our democracy depends on robust, protected speech. As my representative, I expect you to be at the forefront of defending these fundamental rights. The time for action is now – before further damage is done to our constitutional freedoms.
