I am writing to ask for your support of the No Kings Act, a vital legislative measure that reaffirms a simple yet essential principle: no one in our nation, including the President and Vice President, is beyond the reach of the law. In a country built on ideals of equal justice, a President’s immunity from prosecution for criminal actions violates the very tenet we rely on—that our laws apply to all people. The No Kings Act would reestablish Congress’s authority to make that principle unmistakably clear.
This bill is designed to protect the integrity of our democratic system. It sets vital parameters by making sure that Presidents and Vice Presidents are held accountable to the same criminal laws as every citizen and that they can be prosecuted in our courts. The legislation also respects constitutional processes by giving the District of Columbia courts—not the Supreme Court—jurisdiction over its validity. This removes the Supreme Court’s appellate control, grounding the No Kings Act in the jurisdictional authority Congress holds under Article III of the Constitution.
The Act also establishes essential jurisdictional guardrails to ensure that these prosecutions, if they happen, occur on strong constitutional footing. It sets reasonable statutes of limitations and imposes rigorous standards for constitutional challenges. Through this, the Act protects the law against prolonged legal entanglements, safeguarding the judiciary’s time and our nation’s interests.
Supporting the No Kings Act is a choice to uphold the bedrock of our constitutional framework. Historically, Congress has stepped in to clarify constitutional interpretations when the Supreme Court has gone astray. Congress has the responsibility to assert its authority here, just as it has in defining civil rights and regulating election laws. I urge you to honor this tradition and protect our democracy by standing in favor of the No Kings Act.
Thank you for considering this legislation. I ask that you lead in ensuring accountability, equity, and transparency in our government.
