I am deeply concerned about recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions in Issaquah, Washington, particularly those occurring near schools. These actions are not only disrupting our community but are also endangering Washington citizens and residents.
A recent incident outside the Learning Nest Preschool in Issaquah, where ICE arrested a woman dropping off her child, has sent shockwaves through our community. This action, along with subsequent questionable stops by unidentified officers, has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, especially among our immigrant populations.
The impact of these enforcement actions extends beyond the immediate targets. The Issaquah School District has reported increased absences due to families' fears about immigration enforcement. This means children are missing out on their education – a clear violation of their rights and a detriment to our community's future.
What's particularly alarming is the apparent disregard for the Keep Washington Working Act, which prohibits local law enforcement from assisting in civil immigration enforcement. The confusion surrounding which agencies are conducting these stops – with the Washington State Patrol denying involvement – only adds to the community's distress.
I urge you to take immediate action to address this situation. Specifically, I ask that you:
1. Investigate the recent ICE actions in Issaquah, particularly those occurring near schools.
2. Ensure strict adherence to the Keep Washington Working Act.
3. Work towards establishing clear guidelines that prevent immigration enforcement actions near sensitive locations like schools.
4. Support legislation that further protects immigrant communities and ensures the safety of all Washington residents.
The safety and well-being of all members of our community, regardless of their immigration status, should be our top priority. These enforcement actions are not only traumatizing families but are also eroding trust in our institutions and law enforcement.
We need your leadership to restore a sense of security in our community and to ensure that Issaquah, and indeed all of Washington, remains a place where all residents can live, work, and educate their children without fear. The future of our diverse and vibrant community depends on your swift and decisive action on this critical issue.
