I urge you to vote against the SAVE Act. This legislation is an unnecessary solution to a virtually nonexistent problem—non-citizen voting is already illegal under federal law and documented cases are extraordinarily rare. What the SAVE Act would actually accomplish is creating substantial barriers to voter registration for millions of eligible American citizens who lack easy access to documentary proof of citizenship, including elderly voters born before hospital births were standard, women whose names changed through marriage, low-income Americans, and individuals affected by natural disasters or housing instability. The administrative burden this bill would place on state election officials would be enormous, and the cost would ultimately be borne by taxpayers while doing nothing to enhance election security.
