Extend pause on punitive student loan debt collection practices

To: Rep. McGarvey, Sen. McConnell, Sen. Paul

April 24

Restarting involuntary collections like wage garnishment for defaulted student loan borrowers during this period of economic uncertainty will only exacerbate financial hardship for millions of Americans. Given the high rates of delinquency and default on student loans, as well as recent disruptions to income-driven repayment plan applications, borrowers need more time and support to get current on their loans before such draconian measures are implemented. I urge you to extend the pause on wage garnishment and other collection activities to allow borrowers to evaluate their options and enroll in affordable repayment plans. Prioritizing people over punitive debt collection during challenging economic times is both pragmatic and compassionate. Restarting these practices now risks driving more borrowers into deeper financial distress.
