I am writing as your constituent to urge you to support legislation that prohibits the federal government from seizing or compelling disclosure of sensitive voter data from states without clear congressional authorization, strict privacy safeguards, and narrowly defined lawful purpose.
Recent reports indicate that the Department of Justice has demanded full, unredacted voter files from numerous states, including highly sensitive personal information such as driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers. Many states have refused, citing privacy concerns and their constitutional authority to administer elections. Despite this, lawsuits have been filed to compel disclosure.
This raises serious concerns about voter privacy, data security, and the proper balance of authority between federal and state governments. Large centralized databases of sensitive personal information create significant risks of misuse, unauthorized disclosure, and cyberattack. Americans should not have to worry that their personal identifying information will be unnecessarily aggregated or exposed.
Regardless of political affiliation, protecting the confidentiality and integrity of voter information should be a bipartisan priority. I respectfully urge you to support legislation that:
• Prohibits federal collection of sensitive voter data without explicit congressional approval
• Requires strict privacy protections and cybersecurity safeguards
• Respects the constitutional role of states in administering elections
• Protects Americans’ personal information from unnecessary federal aggregation
Please work to ensure that voter privacy and constitutional limits on federal power are respected.
Thank you for your service and for your attention to this important matter. I would appreciate hearing your position on this issue.
