Shame on You for Supporting Trump’s Power Grab

To: Rep. Begich

From: A verified voter in Anchorage, AK

May 23

I am deeply disappointed—and frankly outraged—that you voted in favor of Trump’s so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill.” You didn’t just vote for tax cuts or a budget deal. You voted for a sweeping, dangerous piece of legislation that undermines working-class Alaskans and dismantles the checks and balances that protect our democracy. Let me be clear: this bill is not conservative. It’s authoritarian. It quietly centralizes power under the presidency, guts regulatory agencies, and cripples independent oversight. It’s a blueprint for permanent executive overreach. You voted to: • Let the White House reallocate federal dollars without congressional approval. • Restore impoundment powers that were stripped after Watergate, allowing the president to block funds Congress has already authorized. • Force independent federal agencies to follow White House legal interpretations (EO 14215), destroying their independence. • Require all major federal regulations to expire every 5 years unless reapproved by Congress, enabling Trump to erase decades of protections with the stroke of a pen. • Embed political operatives into federal agencies through the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), giving Trump loyalists direct control over hiring, policy, and enforcement. You didn’t just vote for smaller government—you voted to sabotage it, all while expanding executive power to terrifying levels. And for Alaskans? This bill is a disaster. You voted to: • Slash over $700 billion from Medicaid and $300 billion from SNAP, throwing working families and elders under the bus. • Roll back clean energy incentives, cutting jobs and raising household energy bills. • Gut pensions for federal workers—hardworking Alaskans who keep this state running. • Expand logging and drilling on public lands while handing royalty breaks to oil and mining companies—not for Alaskans’ benefit, but for corporate gain. • Withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement as Alaska faces some of the most severe climate impacts in the world. This bill takes from those who work and gives to those who hoard. It consolidates wealth and power into fewer and fewer hands—while silencing dissent, defanging oversight, and weakening the rule of law. You had a choice. You chose loyalty to Trump over loyalty to Alaskans. I hope your constituents hold you accountable for this betrayal.
