I am writing to express my deep concern about reports showing the Pentagon has created a draft memo which would stop the U.S. military from supporting Scouting America. The implementation of this policy would lead to the removal of Scouting programs from military bases and the cancellation of the National Jamboree and the termination of enlistment benefits for Eagle Scouts. Scouting has maintained its partnership with the United States military since the early 1900s to support military families and develop future leaders. Through their activities Scouts maintain stability for children of military personnel while upholding their commitment to God and country and developing essential qualities for community growth. The military has produced numerous heroes who started their path through Scouting while numerous Scouts have become proud members of the military forces. The statement that Scouting no longer operates as a merit-based system proves to be completely false. The path to earning badges and ranks requires Scouts to demonstrate their dedication through continuous effort and service to others. Eagle Scouts showcase outstanding leadership abilities together with deep dedication to their local communities. You should fight against any attempt to break the connection between Scouting America and the United States military. Your support for Scouting programs and military families and national communities should continue through maintaining this essential partnership. Your dedication to leadership and your backing of developmental programs which train young people for meaningful contributions in life is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
